As the city of Aurora improves its infrastructure offerings to its current and future residents, demands for more infrastructure, improvements and repairs also grow. On any given work day, there can be as many as 100 active work zones within the city.
Traffic engineering staff make every effort to minimize the impact of these work zones to the traveling public. In addition to reviewing and approving the plans to ensure they are safe and compliant with all regulations, staff also work with contractors to seek alternatives to street closures and minimize the number of lane closures and their duration. Staff also try to keep conflicting work zones from overlapping in time or space. In most cases, these efforts are successful. However, on occasion, alternatives are not available and since we are dealing with the outdoor environment, even the best planned projects get delayed by weather, special events or unknown conditions, resulting in confusion and/or unplanned congestion.

Gun Club (between 10th and 14th)
Eastbound Gun Club Road between East 10th and East 14th avenues will have one lane closed to through traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Aug. 31 due to a private project to install new infrastructure.

Both directions of Havana Street at Mississippi Avenue will have intermittent lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Oct. 2 due to a private utility working to maintain utilities.

Jackson Gap Street lane closures
Both directions of Jackson Gap Street on both sides of 64th Avenue will have intermittent lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 31 due to a city project to install infrastructure.
Jackson Gap Street (between 56th and 60th)
Northbound Jackson Gap Street between 56th and 60th will have one lane closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only from Aug. 31 to Sept. 18 due to a private project working to install new infrastructure.
Jackson Gap Way (between 60th and 56th)
Southbound Jackson Gap Way between 60th and 56th will have one lane closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only from Sept. 14 to Oct. 6 due to a private project to install new infrastructure.
Louisiana full closure (between Uravan and Tower)

The alternate route will use Telluride Street between Uravan Street and Iliff Avenue. Follow the signed detour.

Both directions of Mississippi Avenue at Havana Street will have intermittent lanes closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Oct. 2 due to a private utility working to install new utilities.
Peoria lane closures (approaching Mississippi)
Northbound Peoria Street approaching Mississippi Avenue will have one lane closed to through traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only from Sept. 7 to 11 due to a private utility working to maintain utilities.
Quincy lane closure
Westbound Quincy Avenue approaching Parker Road will have alternating lanes closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Aug. 29 due to a city project to install new infrastructure.
Quincy lane closures (between Princeton and Plains)
Eastbound Quincy Avenue between Princeton Drive and Plains Parkway will have intermittent lanes closed around the clock from Sept. 8 to Oct. 2 due to a city project to install new utilities.

Sixth Avenue lane closure (approaching Airport Boulevard)
Eastbound Sixth Avenue approaching Airport Boulevard will have one lane closed from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays only until further notice due to a city project to maintain infrastructure.
Smith Road lane closure (at Chambers)
Eastbound Smith Road on both sides of Chambers Road will have one lane closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Sept. 11 due to a city project to maintain utilities.
Smith Road lane closure (between Chambers and Airport)
Eastbound Smith Road between Chambers and Airport will have one lane closed to through traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 14 due to a city project to replace infrastructure.
Smoky Hill full closure (south of Quincy)
Southbound Smoky Hill Road south of Quincy Avenue will be fully closed around the clock from Aug. 28 to 30 due to a city project to improve intersections.
Uravan full closure (between Telluride and Mississippi)
Northbound Uravan Street between Telluride Street and Mississippi Avenue will be fully closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 due to a city project to perform surface repairs. The alternate route will use Tower Road between Iliff and Mississippi; follow the signed detour.
Vassar full closure (between Lima and Wesley)
Both directions of Vassar Drive between Lima Street and Wesley Avenue will be fully closed around the clock from Sept. 8 to Oct. 17 due to a city water project to install new infrastructure. The alternate route will use Yale between Lima and Nome.
Parker/Quincy/Smoky Hill Intersection Improvements Project
Construction of the Parker/Quincy/Smoky Hill Intersection Improvement Project has begun and will continue through at least December 2026, with additional time built in to ensure the project is completed safely and successfully.
Construction activity will start at 7:30 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Travel Impacts for Monday, Aug. 31, to Friday, Sept. 4 (lane closures will not occur simultaneously)
- Westbound right lane or center lane closure on Quincy Avenue from Atchinson Way to Parker Road around the clock (lane shift will occur once newly installed double right-turn lanes are approved to open).
- Eastbound right lane closure on Quincy Avenue from Parker Road to Smoky Hill Road.
- Northbound right lane closure on Parker Road from Rice Place to Quincy Avenue.
- Southbound right lane closure along Parker Road from Quincy Avenue to Rice Place.
Project update:
The two westbound right-turn lanes onto northbound Parker Road have been completed. We are planning an updated traffic control shift once the traffic lights and signage are finished. Asphalt work is currently ongoing at Carson and Quincy, as well as Smoky Hill and Quincy.

56th and Hudson Road Closures and Project

Please note: Flood damage has restricted access to both 56th Avenue and Hudson Road. Heavy rainfall undermined the roadways and destroyed the road surface in some locations. The road closures are necessary to protect the traveling public while the project team works to reopen the roadways. Project information will continue to be posted on the project webpage as it becomes available.

The replacement road is currently being designed, and construction is now estimated to start in summer 2027. Follow the signed detour; use alternate routes. I-70 pavement repairs from Chambers to E-470
Starting Monday, Aug. 31, the Colorado Department of Transportation and contract partner, Villalobos Concrete, Inc., will begin repairing and replacing concrete pavement in both directions of Interstate 70 from Chambers Road to the E-470 exchange. The purpose of this state and federally funded project is to improve safety and mobility along a heavily traveled 6.6-mile stretch of the I-70 corridor.
Work includes replacing and grinding concrete pavement panels to provide a safe, smooth driving surface, and repairing and repaving the decks of four bridge structures within the project limits. The project has an anticipated duration of 16 months.
Work will take place Monday to Sunday, with working hours split between daytime and overnight shifts. Schedule adjustments will be made during the winter months.
Traffic impacts:
-Various seven-day, continuous single-lane closures will exist in both directions of I-70, east of the Picadilly Road interchange.
-Weekday single-lane closures will be in place on westbound I-70 at the east end of the project corridor, and anytime on weekends.
-Overnight single-lane closures will exist in both directions of I-70 sitewide during varying hours from Sunday to Thursday. Overnight double-lane closures in both directions of I-70 at the west end of the project from 11 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday to Thursday.
-Traffic shifts, reduced speeds and a 12-foot width restriction will be in place sitewide. Shoulder closures will be taken during daytime and overnight hours for access to the work zone.

ARTA I-70 Aerotropolis Parkway Interchange Project
The Aerotropolis Regional Transportation Authority and contract partner, Ames Construction, is constructing the I-70 Aerotropolis Parkway Interchange in Adams County.
Part of ARTA’s planned regional transportation infrastructure improvements across the district, the purpose of the project is to provide much-needed access to developments from Aurora and Adams County, and to improve connectivity to Denver International Airport and the adjacent area served by the Aerotropolis Regional Transportation Authority.

East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit coming to Aurora
East Colfax BRT Construction is now extending into Aurora, from Yosemite to I-225:
• Construction will be completed in a single phase, with work occurring simultaneously at both eastbound and westbound stations.
• Traffic control cones and lane closures will be used in active construction zones as work progresses.
• Traffic will remain open in the center lanes of East Colfax Ave. throughout the project.
• Work will progress block by block, with each section expected to take about 3 to 6 months to complete.
• Construction work for the side-running stations will occur within designated work zones that include portions of the sidewalk.

Preconstruction Activities
Crews began work Aug. 3 on preconstruction potholing operations along East Colfax Avenue from Yosemite Street to I-225. Work began on the northside of East Colfax Avenue from Yosemite through the Ursula area, with potholing also occurring on the south side of East Colfax. These activities are expected to move throughout the corridor over the next four weeks.
During this work, please expect:
- Rotating closures of the far right lane in both the eastbound and westbound directions
- Temporary intersection closures as crews complete potholing operations
- Each work area is expected to last about 2 to 3 days before moving to the next location
Peoria Station Construction

Construction at the Peoria Station is anticipated to begin Aug. 24, resulting in the closures of two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane on Colfax at Peoria until early October.
R Line Water Line Relocation

In late August or early September, crews will begin a water line relocation project near the R Line Station to prepare for future station construction. This work will occur in:
- The far right eastbound lane on the south side of East Colfax Avenue between Ursula Street and I-225
- The center lane of Fitzsimons Parkway with lanes open in both directions
The BRT project continues the work started in Denver to replace the existing 15 and 15L buses and save bus riders up to 30 minutes in travel time from Union Station to the R Line Station at I-225.
