Benefits & Retirement

The following is a listing of some of the benefits that are offered to full-time and part-time career service employees.

Holidays: There are 10 paid holidays granted to all regular and introductory employees.

Personal Leave: After completion of one year's continuous service, an employee is given time off with pay in the form of Personal Leave. Regular full-time employees are entitled to 24 hours; regular part-time employees are entitled to 12 hours.

Annual Leave: Employees are given paid annual leave after the successful completion of their introductory period. Part-time and full-time Career Service employees working less than 40 hours per week accrue annual leave on a prorated basis according to the number of hours worked.

Sick Leave: All regular and introductory employees, excluding elected officials, accrue sick leave upon their date of hire. All regular Career Service employees accrue 104 hours of sick leave for each 2080 hours of work.

Employee Leave Sharing Program: The city offers an Employee Leave Sharing Program to assist with income protection for full-time and part-time regular employees when an employee must be absent from work due to catastrophic medical hardship to the employee, spouse or children. City employees may voluntarily donate annual, personal and sick leave hours to a qualified employee.

FMLA: In compliance with the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act, the city provides employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a calendar year for eligible family and medical conditions.

Emergency Leave: Any regular or introductory employee may be allowed, at the discretion of the department director, up to five working days or 40 hours paid time off in the case of a death involving an employee's immediate family or in the case of a natural disaster involving the employee.

Civil Leave: Any regular or introductory employee who is summoned for jury duty or is subpoenaed in an official capacity during a regularly scheduled work day will be given paid time off.

Military Leave: Any regular or introductory full-time employee who is a member of the National Guard or the Reserves will receive a maximum of 15 (eight-hour) paid days per calendar year.

Medical, Dental and Vision Coverage: Four medical insurance plans (effective 1/1/13), two dental insurance plans, and one vision plan are available to cover regular full-time and regular part-time city employees and any eligible dependents they wish to cover. Medical, dental, and vision coverage is effective the first day of the month following an employee's date of hire.

Life Insurance: Life insurance is provided to regular employees in the event of death. The basic benefit is provided by the city and is at no cost to the employee. In addition, regular employees are covered by the Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit, which provides for additional benefits in the event of accidental death or serious accidental injury. Eligibility for life insurance begins on the employee's date of hire.

Flexible Spending Accounts: Introductory or regular employees have the option to participate in the city's Flexible Spending Account. This program allows employees to increase their take home pay by using pre-tax dollars to pay copays and other out-of-pocket expenses. This program also allows employees to increase their tax savings by making pre-tax deposits to a Dependent Care Spending Account to pay for work-related dependent care expenses.

Retirement: All regular employees start participating in the retirement plan, which covers their occupational group as specified in the City Code on the day they begin work. All regular Career Service employees contribute 7.0 (effective 1/1/13) percent of their gross salary to the General Employees' Retirement Plan.

Long Term Disability: When an employee cannot work for a prolonged time because of serious injury or illness, Long Term Disability Insurance (LTD) can supplement 60 percent of an employee's salary while he/she is unable to work due to the disability. Full-time and part-time regular Career Service employees must be unable to work for 90 days before eligible to draw LTD, and have completed his/her 6 month employment introductory period.

Deferred Compensation (IRS Section 457): Participation in a Deferred Compensation program through the city of Aurora is available on a voluntary basis. Deferred Compensation provides pre-tax savings to employees who participate through automatic payroll deductions. The program assists in saving additional monies for retirement. There are many investment choices offered by each of the three Deferred Compensation providers. Your pre-tax dollar investment(s) grow each payday while interest accumulates.

Social Security: The city is required to pay such amounts as employer's contribution in accordance with the provision of the Federal Insurance Contribution Act.
