The Criminal Division of the City Attorney's Office is located on the second floor of the Aurora Municipal Court Building. This division is responsible for the prosecution of Municipal Ordinance and Regulation violations and handles all appellate work stemming from such prosecutions.

The Aurora City's Attorney's Office is legal counsel for the Mayor, City Council and all city agencies, departments and boards and commissions. Our office participates in:

  • Financing public improvement projects
  • Drafting and reviewing city ordinances and other legislation
  • Drafting and negotiating contracts
  • Litigating civil matters in state and federal court
  • Advising City Council on state legislation
  • Providing general counsel and advice to City Council and city staff

Please note: The City Attorney's Office provides legal counsel to the City Council, City Manager and city departments, and cannot by law give legal advice to individual residents. Individuals seeking legal counsel may contact a private attorney, Colorado Legal Services, or the Public Defender's Office.

**Service of Legal Process to the City and/or its Employees**:

Serving the City and/or its employees in their official capacity as an employee of the City:
If you need to serve a newly filed lawsuit (i.e., Summons and Complaint), subpoena, or other legal process on the City, its departments, or city employees in their official capacity, in most cases, the City Attorney's office will waive formal service. Please send your request to [email protected]. Your email should include all of the documents you need to serve as well as a waiver form for acceptance of the service. Our email account is regularly monitored, and we will respond to your request within one business day. If you have further questions regarding service of lawsuits, please contact our front office at 303.739.7030

Serving a City employee for a legal matter NOT related to their employment as a City Employee (PLEASE READ!):
If you need to serve a City employee legal process that is NOT related to their employment with the City of Aurora, please call the main phone number of the Aurora City Attorney's Office at 303.739.7030.   Please make sure to have the employee's full name prior to calling our office.  You will save yourself a lot of time and frustration by calling our office BEFORE coming to the Aurora Municipal Center (AMC).
