Nomination of Candidates
Candidates are nominated for office by obtaining a certain number of valid signatures on nomination petitions. Nomination petitions may be circulated by candidates or petition circulators from Aug. 9, 2023, until Aug. 29, 2023.
Individuals who are not nominated through the nomination petition process may register as a write-in candidate, meaning they are eligible to run but their name will not appear on the ballot. Write-in Candidate Affidavits are due to the City Clerk no later than Sept. 5, 2023.

Ballot issues and questions are placed on the ballot by obtaining a certain number of valid signatures on petition sections. Visit the Initiative, Referendum and Charter Amendment webpage for additional information on citizen-initiated legislation.
PROPOSED Citizen-Initiated Charter Amendment: There are petition sections being circulated for a charter amendment to be on the ballot at the Nov. 7, 2023, Regular Municipal Election.
Summary of Charter Amendment: Reduce the term limit for elected officials from three (3) consecutive four-year terms to two (2) consecutive four-year terms; change the form of government provided for Aurora to a "mayor-council' form of government; remove provisions related to the city manager; provide the mayor the authority to appoint, dismiss, and direct department heads, directors, and executive appointees; provide the mayor the authority to veto legislation passed by city council; and add one at-large member to city council so the legislative branch of the city remains at eleven (11) council members.
