Aurora Fire Rescue Hazmat crews respond to traffic accident involving commercial fuel tank truck
An estimated 70-75 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the intersection
Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a hazardous material fuel leak in the intersection near Mississippi Ave. and Buckley Rd. at approximately 6:30 p.m. this evening as a result of a two-vehicle traffic accident involving a diesel fuel truck.
The incident was reported to Aurora911 because a motor vehicle crash involving a commercial fuel tank truck and another vehicle was damaged and began leaking fuel into the intersection. The first-arriving crews called for AFR’s hazardous material, or Hazmat, truck to respond and begin mitigation. Crews on-scene medically assessed both vehicles and reported no injuries.
When the Hazmat unit arrived, the crews began assessing the damage and mitigating the leak. The crews were able to off-load approximately 25-30 gallons of diesel fuel and used absorbent pads to clean up the fuel that spilled on the ground. The saturated absorbent pads were transferred to barrels for disposal.
AFR estimates that approximately 70-75 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the intersection, based on the size of the fuel tank, which has a 100-gallon capacity, and the fuel that was off-loaded.
