News releaseAt approximately 10:00 pm this evening, Aurora Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a residence in the 17000 block of East Rice Circle in Aurora. While in route, dispatched received additional reports of fire and as per AFR policy, additional resources were dispatched to assist with the fire.

Upon arrival, crews quickly made entrance to the structure on the property which was the origination building of the reported fire. After entering the structure, crews found extremely low visibility and determined that heavy fire conditions had moved throughout the building causing structural instability and burned out stairways. At that time, fire operations moved from the interior to the exterior of the structure with large size hose lines and hose streams directed into the structure. During the transition from interior to exterior it was also determined that multiple units in the complex were involved with active fire requiring additional units on scene, leading to the 2nd alarm assignment.

After extended exterior operations, the fire was brought under control and crews were able to make entry into the structure. Searches for any trapped parties were completed within the primary and an adjacent buildings, no persons or animals found.

Crews completed searches for any hidden fires, finding none. The cause of the incident is under investigation. At this time the exact number of displaced residents is unknown but multiple homes are involved and in need of red cross assistance.

As a result of firefighting operations, Aurora Fire Rescue did have one firefighter injured and transported to a local emergency department with minor/not serious injuries. That firefighter was treated and expected to be released from the hospital later this evening or early tomorrow. Additionally, APD did have a couple officers that reported smoke inhalation and self transported for treatment. Their status is unknown at this time but reports indicate the injuries to be minor and non serious.
