Across the state, Colorado is experiencing severe drought conditions, with state officials drawing comparisons to 2002 - one of the most significant drought years in Colorado’s history. As of the writing of this article in early February, statewide snowpack is at the lowest level on record for this point in the season following an exceptionally warm and dry fall and winter. These conditions significantly limit the opportunity for meaningful spring and summer runoff, reducing the likelihood that reservoirs levels will recover to typical seasonal operating ranges this year. Aurora Water’s storage reservoirs were approximately 60% full in early February. You can monitor reservoir levels on Aurora’s website.

Maintaining adequate water storage is critical, as it allows water providers to buffer the impacts of prolonged and severe drought conditions. In Colorado, winter snowfall gradually melts in the spring, replenishing reservoirs that help support water needs through long, hot summers and often dry autumn months.

March and April are historically Colorado’s snowiest months and often bring heavier, wetter storms that contribute more directly to runoff. While additional snowfall during this period can improve conditions, it would take an unusually large amount of snow to fully make up for the significant deficits created by an exceptionally warm and dry fall and winter. As a result, spring snowfall alone is unlikely to eliminate current drought conditions.

As of early February, City Council has not declared a drought for Aurora. Aurora Water will continue to closely monitor conditions and keep the community informed as conditions evolve AuroraGov.org/Drought, residents can learn how to access and use their online account portal to monitor water use, identify potential leaks and explore conservation programs available to customers. Updates will also be shared on social media.
