Posted on 03/24/2025

(March 24, 2025) – The Aurora Police Department was involved in a shooting early Monday morning while investing a suspicious occurrence in central Aurora.

About 3:15 a.m. Monday, patrol officers located a male who appeared to be attempting to break into vehicles in the 1000 block of South Evanston Way. Officers attempted to contact the male, who ran from police.

While additional officers were responding to the area, information was aired that the suspect concealed a shiny object in his waistband as he ran from police. Among the responding officers were two sergeants, who located the male a short distance away in an apartment complex parking lot in the 1000 block of South Elkhart Way.

The sergeants gave the suspect commands to stop and show them his hands. The suspect did not listen to commands and an officer-involved shooting occurred. A knife was later located at the scene.

Officers immediately provided the suspect with first aid until medical responders arrived at the scene. The suspect, later determined to be a 16-year-old Aurora resident, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He is not being identified because he is a minor.

The sergeant who fired is a 20-year member of the Aurora Police Department. He has been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with agency policy.

The Aurora Police Department Major Crime Homicide Unit is investigating the initial nonfatal shooting.

The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation of the officer-involved shooting to determine whether the officer’s actions complied with state law.

The Aurora Police Department’s Internal Investigations Bureau is conducting a concurrent administrative investigation to determine whether the officer’s actions complied with agency policies and training.

The investigations are active and ongoing. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867). Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
