The city of Aurora celebrated the grand reopening of Fulton Park Friday, March 22, following renovations.
The neighborhood park, located at 9920 E. 8th Ave., was officially reopened following a ceremony and ribbon cutting. Those in attendance included Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, Council Member Crystal Murillo; Parks, Recreation and Open Space Director Brooke Bell; representatives from Arapahoe County and Arapahoe County Open Spaces; leadership and students from Aurora Public Schools’ Fulton Academy of Excellence; city staff from Parks, Recreation and Open Space; and residents from the surrounding neighborhoods.
The new park amenities, including the new inclusive playground, were enjoyed by all in attendance during the event, and community members expressed their excitement about the reopening and renovations.
Renovations to the park include a new accessible concrete walkway around the park, accessible parking, resurfaced basketball and pickleball courts and a natural seating area, which can be used to relax or used as a fitness zone or outdoor classroom. The small, outdated playground was renovated and expanded to feature new inclusive elements so kids of all ages and abilities can play together.
Water conservation measures were also taken with the renovation. Approximately one-third of an acre of low-use Kentucky bluegrass on the west end of the park, west of the walkway, is being converted to water-wise native grasses. This conversion will not only save hundreds of thousands of gallons of water but will also enhance the natural landscape of the park by embracing Colorado’s native plants.
