Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program

About the Program

The Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program is designed to enhance safety, reduce speeding and address cut-through traffic on the city's residential streets, which improves the quality of life for our residents.

The program uses a range of strategies to create safer and more livable neighborhoods by managing traffic speeds and encouraging responsible driving behaviors.

Tools and strategies are selected based on the type of roadway, land use environment, and each neighborhood's specific needs.

Eligibility

To be considered for the program, the following criteria must be met:

  • The roadway must be classified as a local or collector street (arterial roadways, which are major higher-speed roadways, are not eligible for the program). Visit this link to download the city map and use the legend to find your street type.
  • The average speed of vehicles must exceed the posted speed limit by at least 7 miles per hour.
  • The street must carry a minimum of 500 vehicles per day.
Neighborhoods may submit one application for each roadway section of concern once every three years.
  • A minimum of three sponsors are required per request (each sponsor must reside in separate households and on or near the roadway of concern).
  • Sponsors must build support among other neighborhood residents, property owners and business owners within the identified project application area.

Overview of Traffic Calming Tools

The city's Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program seeks to reduce speeding and cut-through traffic on residential streets and improve the quality of life in neighborhoods by using a set of traffic calming strategies.

  • Short-term implementation strategies include signing and striping, which offer effective and more rapid implementation.
  • Mid- and long-term implementation strategies provide a more comprehensive and holistic approach that may include multiple treatments.
  • When necessary, traffic calming devices should be designed to accommodate emergency services, roadway maintenance vehicles and transit vehicles.
  • The following information provides a brief overview of tools that the city may consider. Please reference the Traffic Calming Toolkit for additional information and detail on these tools.
