Furloughs

2026 City Furloughs

As a cost-saving measure, the city will implement four furlough closure days in 2026. On furlough days, most city facilities and operations will be closed, including municipal offices, court services, recreation centers and libraries, with essential services and emergency operations remaining fully operational

Furlough days are one of several strategies the city is using to responsibly manage its finances while continuing to deliver high-quality services to the community, supporting Aurora’s Well Managed strategic outcome.

The city selected these dates strategically to minimize disruption to city services and, wherever possible, reduce the financial impact on employees.

  • Friday, Jan. 16, 2026 (prior to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19)
  • Friday, April 10, 2026
  • Thursday, July 2, 2026 (prior to the Independence Day holiday on July 3)
  • Thursday, Dec. 24, 2026 (prior to Christmas Day on Dec. 25)

A list of closures will be listed in the news section at AuroraGov.org a few days before each furlough day.

The city is required by its charter to adopt a balanced budget each year. To meet this requirement, City Council approved the city’s 2026 budget in November 2025, which reduced spending and used one-time reserves to address a projected General Fund shortfall of more than $21 million. In balancing the General Fund, the city prioritized core services, identified operational efficiencies, and worked to preserve service levels over the five-year forecast period.
