The Crime Free Multi-Housing Program is a program designed to reduce crime, drugs, and gang activity on apartment properties. This is a free and voluntary program for interested property managers. Police officers work hand in hand with apartment managers to ensure a safer multi-housing community for their residents. This is accomplished by using CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Designs) principles along with the managers strictly enforcing the leases that the residents of their communities have signed.

There are many advantages to being part of the Crime Free Program. They include:

• Improved property value
• Improved personal safety for residents
• Stable, more satisfied tenant base resulting in an increased demand for rental units
• Lower maintenance and repair cost
• More time spent on routine management and less on crisis control
• Free Reports for participating properties
• Posted signage indicating “Crime Free” on property

Managers of apartment communities work with the police to become educated about crime prevention and creating a safe environment by passing three phases of the crime free multi housing program.

Phase 1: Managers and employees of apartment communities attend a free eight hour Crime Free Multi-Housing course conducted by the Aurora Police Department. The topics of this course include: strengthening the lease addendum, and properly applying CPTED principles and its application; how to conduct background checks on future residents; the eviction process, and how to build a safer more enjoyable community.

Phase 2: The Aurora Police Department will conduct a safety survey to ensure that the required CPTED principles are being applied properly on the properties.

Phase 3: Apartment communities conduct a safety social on their property to educate residents on safety and creating a stronger relationship with the Aurora Police.
