“A History of Lowry Air Force Base” Exhibit Opening March 14 at Aurora History Museum
The Aurora History Museum is pleased to announce the new exhibit “A History of Lowry Air Force Base,” which chronicles the story of Lowry Air Force Base, the people who served there and the importance of the base to Aurora and the surrounding areas. The new exhibit will be on display from March 14 through July 9 at the Aurora History Museum, 15051 E. Alameda Parkway.
“A History of Lowry Air Force Base” exhibit features photographs, documents and a comprehensive chronology of the Air Force base. Visitors will learn about the many individuals who contributed to the development of Lowry, from its founding before World War II to its closure in 1994 and discover the unique stories of the people and technology that shaped its storied history. A special opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at the Aurora History Museum. Enjoy refreshments, meet museum staff and talk with Lowry veterans.
“The museum is really excited to open ‘A History of Lowry Air Force Base’ since the base was such an important part of Aurora’s growth,” said T. Scott Williams, museum director. “Many of the men and women who served at Lowry stayed and raised their families there, and this exhibit will tell their stories and honor their military service; most of original Lowry is now residential, so sharing its history with the current generation lets folks see their neighborhoods in a new light and broadens the understanding of our city’s past.”
A little over 85 years ago, the Army Air Corps established an airfield at the old Agnes C. Phipps Memorial Sanitorium on the border of Aurora and Denver. Throughout its history, Lowry played a vital role in the defense of the United States, providing training, intelligence and logistics support to the U.S. military. It was home to many of the Air Force’s most important training programs. Lowry became a place of pride for the citizens of Aurora and brought more jobs, more homes and more people to this growing community.
The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the Aurora History Museum is always free. For more information, call 303.739.6660 or visit AuroraMuseum.org.
