Aurora Traffic Investigation Unit Announces Arrest in July Powhaton Fatal Hit-and-Run
(Aug. 19, 2026) – An Aurora man has been arrested in connection with leaving the scene of a collision that killed a 26-year-old cyclist.
On August 18, 53-year-old Jamie Gardner turned himself in to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office on probable cause of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. He was subsequently released on a $50,000 bond.
The arrest comes just three weeks after the victim, identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office as 26-year-old Arthur Williams, was discovered deceased by passers-by about 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 27 near the intersection of South Powhaton Road and East Jewell Avenue. The Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Unit began an investigation into the collision the same day.
At the time, investigators had no witnesses and no time frame to know when the hit-and-run collision occurred. Evidence collected at the scene ultimately led to the department sharing an image both internally and externally of a white Subaru Outback, asking for possible leads or direction of travel in the area near Powhaton Road and East Jewell Avenue.
Using those publicly shared images, detectives with the department’s Intelligence Unit utilized Flock Safety cameras to begin to help the Traffic Unit in their search to identify the driver. Ultimately, detectives were able to identify a white Subaru Outback with extensive damage leaving a neighborhood subdivision near South Harvest Road the morning of July 28. The Flock Safety camera also captured a license plate, helping investigators identify Gardner as the driver.
“I cannot stress enough how invaluable technology is in police work, particularly to bring justice for families and closure in cases,” said Chief Todd Chamberlain. “The utilization of Flock in this investigation not only gave the victim a voice, but it also allowed us to identify a vehicle and a driver and ultimately provide answers to the family about what happened to their son. We must remember that is what we are always working for: the victims and their families.
“Without the technology available to us, this case might still be open, and a family might still be waiting for answers.”
