Aurora Fire Rescue responded to an outdoor swimming pool near Del Mar Park on a hazardous materials incident at approximately 2:00 pm. The swimming pool maintenance personnel found a pump leaking pool chemicals into the air and shut it down before AFR's arrival. Once on scene, AFR's Hazardous Materials Team worked to evacuate the pool, monitor the air quality, and treat people who sustained injuries. Seven patients sustained nonlife-threatening injuries, five of which were transported to area hospitals. The incident led to the pool's closure, and repairs are now being awaited.
AFR would like to remind you about safe swimming tips.
It's crucial to swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone. Provide close and constant attention to children, even when a lifeguard is present, no matter how well the child can swim or how shallow the water is. Avoid distractions, including cell phones. Never leave a young child unattended near water, and do not trust a child's life to another child; teach children always to ask permission to go near water and designate a "water watcher" whenever in a group setting. These safety tips are guidelines and essential knowledge that can save lives.
