Seven total Aurora Fire Rescue fire trucks responded to a fire at Arterra Place Apartments, near S. Buckley Road and E. Kentucky Avenue, today at 2:30 p.m. Crews began arriving within four minutes and quickly extinguished the fire originating from a storage cabinet, located on the covered patio of a top-floor unit within the three-story building.

One individual was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Three other patients were treated by emergency medical crews on scene. No other injuries were reported and all occupants at the apartment complex have been accounted for.

Flames from the fire activated the sprinkler system on the patio which prevented the fire from extending into the interior areas of the apartment unit. Fire alarms also activated and occupants within the complex were able to safely evacuate.

An origin and cause of the fire has not yet been determined and the incident is under investigation.

As May is National Building Safety Month, functioning sprinkler systems, fire alarms and other important building safety protections are essential to keeping structures safe for those who occupy and use them. Residents also can do their part by testing every smoke alarm in their home monthly. Batteries should be replaced at least once a year, and smoke alarms should be replaced every 8-10 years.
