Aurora Fire Rescue responded to reports at approximately 12:48 pm today of a fire on a multi-family residential building currently under construction near the intersection of E. Colfax Avenue and Peoria Street in Aurora. The fire was extinguished, however AFR will continue operations into the evening to put out hot spots using aerial ladders.

The building is unoccupied and no one was inside the building at the time of the fire. One AFR firefighter suffered minor injuries but was not transported to a hospital and is recovering.

Based on reports that the fire was centralized on the fifth floor of the five-story building, crews began an offensive strategy to put out the fire. However, they had to withdraw due to the fire’s intensity to keep first-responding firefighters safe. The fire was escalated to a five-alarm fire in order to activate more resources to assist in suppressing the fire. A total of 42 resources assisted in the operation. Whenever multiple apparatus are involved on a scene, water access is a challenge.

AFR thanks Denver Fire Department, South Adams County Fire Department, Sable Altura Fire, South Metro Fire Rescue, Rattlesnake Fire Protection District and Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue for their crucial assistance on the fire.

All exposures have been protected. An investigation into the origin and cause is underway.
