(Sept. 30, 2023) – The Aurora Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating a double fatal crash in the Expo Park neighborhood.
Officers responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash about 6 p.m. Friday, near the intersection of South Havana Street and East Exposition Avenue. A red 2017 Dodge Charger was driving north on South Havana when it struck a maroon 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was driving south on Havana and attempting to turn left onto eastbound Exposition Avenue.
The impact from the crash pushed the Jeep approximately 100 feet north into a drainage retention wall before coming to rest in the northbound lanes of Havana Street. The 43-year-old driver and a 5-year-old passenger were fatally injured in the crash and died at the scene.
Two more passengers of the Jeep, ages 8 and 10, were taken to a local hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. They are expected to survive.
The driver of the Charger, a 21-year-old man, also was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. His condition was unknown late Friday night.
Northbound Havana was closed for more than four hours for the crash investigation and reopened to normal traffic about 10:15 p.m. Friday. Investigators suspect speed and drug intoxication are contributing factors to the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the deceased after notifications of next of kin.
The crash marks the 53rd and 54th traffic-related deaths this year in Aurora.
