Aurora Awards Funds to Organizations for Youth Violence Intervention and Prevention Efforts
As part of Aurora’s ongoing efforts to address youth violence – a problem many cities face - the city has awarded $260,000 to organizations that support youth violence reduction efforts through prevention and intervention services within the city. Organizations that provide intervention services received a total of nearly $195,000, while organizations that offer prevention programming received a total of $65,000.
Organizations funded for intervention services include:
- The Juvenile Assessment Center - 18th Judicial District
- University of Colorado Hospital At-Risk Intervention and Mentoring (AIM) Program
- Mosaic Unlimited Inc.
- Aurora Community Connection
Organizations funded for prevention services include:
- A1 Boxing
- Aurora Housing Authority
- Aurora Sister Cities
- Denver Area Youth for Christ
- Driven by Our Ambitions (DBOA)
- Rocky Mountain Welcome Center
- Salvation Army
- Urban Nature Impact
“These partners will provide essential programming to our community in addressing gaps in services within our city that will help serve youth and families most adversely impacted by youth violence,” said Christina Amparan, the city of Aurora’s Youth Violence Prevention Program manager. “We look forward to continuing our youth violence reduction efforts and expanding programming options within the city to serve youth and families through this partnership.”
Funding for this effort comes from marijuana tax revenue. Organizations for prevention services have until the end of 2022 to use the funding provided, while organizations for intervention services have until June 2023. Grant applications for funding were reviewed and scored by a panel that consisted of a school resource officer from the Aurora Police Department and representatives from the Tri-County Health Department, Aurora Mental Health Center, Colorado Youth Detention Continuum, and Aurora Housing and Community Services.
The city allocated $500,000 for these efforts; the remaining $240,000 in funding will be allocated through future funding opportunities.
