Fluoride in Aurora’s water is a natural result of mineral erosion in our mountain supplies. Aurora does not add fluoride to its drinking water. The current maximum levels allowed by the EPA is 4 parts per million (ppm). The average level of fluoride deteced in Aurora’s water is 0.72 ppm (2024).
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Department of Health and Human Services suggested maximum levels be set at 0.7 ppm to reduce the occurrence of staining an spotting of the teeth, called dental fluorosis. Both agencies still recommend the use of fluoride in drinking water as a means of promoting oral health.
Aurora is fortunate that our natural levels are close to the suggested levels. Removal of fluoride in water treatment is very difficult and costly.
