AURORA, Colo. – In September of 2019, Aurora Fire Rescue began a new program with the aims of building closer relationships with elementary school faculty and students. The goal is to make a special effort to meet needs that arise. According to Fire Chief Fernando Gray, Sr., this could include reading with students who are falling behind, working with children on their workbooks, or spending time in the lunchroom or playground.
As of January, 2020, the participating fire crews established 54 partnerships with schools.
“The kids and teachers love the program,” said Captain Sauder of Station 3 in the Morris Heights neighborhood. “There are times that we will just go and hangout with them during lunch or a special event. Regardless of how we spend time with the kids, we are met with great responses.”
Captain Whiting of Station 1 situated in the Aurora Cultural Arts District said, “We have created a strong relationship with our partners at Boston K-8 and have actively participated in multiple events. Early in the year we were able to cheer on the kids in a fun run, we participated in the October Fire Prevention week, did one reading session with the 1st graders, and participated in the afterschool STEAM night.”
“We believe the program offers a rewarding experience for school faculty, students, and fire fighters in Aurora.” Community Engagement Administrator, Sherri-Jo Stowell said. “Adopt A School is one of the important ways that Aurora Fire Rescue is increasing our non-emergent contacts with the community. The program will present opportunities for community risk reduction, an important fire department mission.”
