Lock Your Vehicle: Always lock your car, even if you're stepping away for just a moment. Make sure all doors, windows, and the sunroof are securely closed.
Park in Well-Lit Areas: Choose well-lit, high-traffic areas when parking your vehicle. At home, consider installing motion sensor lights or bright LED bulbs to illuminate your driveway and discourage thieves.
Use Visible Deterrents: Install devices like steering wheel locks, tire locks, or visible alarm systems. These tools act as clear warnings and make your vehicle a less attractive target.
Hide Valuables: Never leave valuables—such as laptops, phones, or bags—in plain sight. If you must leave items in your car, store them out of view in the trunk or glove compartment.
Install an Anti-Theft System: An alarm system or GPS tracker can alert you if your car is tampered with and increase the chance of recovery if stolen. Programs like MetroTrack offer free GPS devices and visible decals to aid recovery and deter theft.
Protect Your Spare Keys: Avoid hiding spare keys in common spots like under floor mats or inside the glove box. Keep them in a secure, inaccessible place.
Use Secure Parking: When possible, park in a locked garage or monitored lot with security cameras or attendants. Secure environments reduce risk.
Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity. If you see someone loitering around vehicles or attempting to break in, contact the police immediately.
Don't Leave Your Car Running Unattended: Even in cold weather, never leave your vehicle running and unattended. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to drive away.
The Colorado Auto Theft Authority's official website, lockdownyourcar.org, serves as a comprehensive resource for preventing auto theft. It offers practical tips to secure your vehicle, information on catalytic converter theft, and assistance for theft victims. The site also provides access to resources, events, and grant opportunities aimed at reducing vehicle theft across the state.
Stay Alert and Aware
Be vigilant: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when entering or exiting your vehicle.
Avoid distractions: Refrain from using your phone or other devices that can divert your attention.
Secure Your Vehicle
Lock doors and windows: Keep your vehicle's doors locked and windows rolled up, even when driving.
Park wisely: Choose well-lit, populated areas for parking. Avoid isolated spots, especially at night.
Drive Defensively
Maintain space: When stopped in traffic, leave enough room between your car and the vehicle ahead to maneuver if necessary.
Be cautious at intersections: Keep doors locked and windows up when stopped at lights or stop signs.
Be Cautious of Common Carjacking Tactics
Rear-end scams: If tapped from behind, proceed to a safe, public location before exiting your vehicle.
Stranger assistance: Be wary of individuals signaling that something is wrong with your car; they may be attempting to lure you out.
Fake accidents: Avoid stopping for apparent accidents in remote areas; it could be a setup.
Protect Your Personal Safety
Avoid high-risk areas: Stay away from locations known for high crime rates, especially after dark.
Travel with others: When possible, don't drive alone, particularly in unfamiliar or high-risk areas.
Keep valuables out of sight: Don't leave purses, electronics, or other valuables visible in your car.
In Case of an Attempted Carjacking
Do not resist: Your life is more valuable than your vehicle. Surrender your car without resistance.
Observe details: If possible, note the suspect's appearance, vehicle, and direction of escape without putting yourself at risk.
Call for help: As soon as it's safe, contact the police and provide them with all relevant information.
