The Aurora City Council approved a resolution Monday, March 28, to support comprehensive crime-reduction strategies in conjunction with the Aurora Police Department and city management, and to set up regular progress updates on new initiatives and existing efforts to build a safer community.
The resolution, sponsored by At-Large Council Member Dustin Zvonek, focuses on five areas:
- Recruitment and retention efforts to ensure full staffing levels at the Aurora Police Department, and industry-leading training for all officers
- Data collection and analytics to guide patrol assignments and efficiencies
- Restoration of AGRIP (Aurora Gang Reduction Impact Program) for youth violence intervention and prevention
- Increased staffing for the Crisis Response Team, which pairs clinicians with police officers to respond to mental-health-related calls for service
- Strategies to address the public safety and public health challenges at encampments
The resolution provides for monthly updates to be made about each of the strategies at the City Council’s Public Safety, Courts and Civil Service Policy Committee, as well as quarterly updates to the full City Council at a study session. Updates will include information on existing and ongoing programs, as well as new initiatives and ideas.
