Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, Aurora Public Libraries no longer charges late fees on
overdue items to make library services more accessible to all
residents. Fine-free items will include all books, audiobooks,
DVDs/Blu-Rays and youth services discovery kits.
Items such as
laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots will still carry late fees*, and patrons will
still be held accountable for damaged or lost materials.
*Fines accrue at 20 cents per day per item to a maximum of $10 per item.
When an account
has reached $10 in unpaid fines, borrowing privileges are suspended.
Fines can be paid online using your credit card. Borrowing privileges
are also suspended when an account has received two overdue notices for
any single item.
There are several ways to extend your borrowing time period through renewing:
- Online with My Account
- Calling any of our locations and speaking with a staff member directly.
- Auto-renewal on eligible items. Click the tab below to learn more about Auto-Renewal.
Please note, that the following conditions will prohibit renewal on an item:
- There is a hold on the item
- The item is non-renewable, such as a museum pass
- The item is downloadable, such as an OverDrive or Hoopla e-book or e-audiobook
- The item has reached its maximum allowable renewals (currently four)
- The item is checked out through Prospector or Interlibrary loan
- The patron account charges have exceeded $10
- There is a block on the patron's account
As of Jan. 1, 2020, auto-renewal is now available on many items available through Aurora Public Library.
Items eligible for auto-renewal
will be renewed up to four (4) times when the three-day courtesy
reminder is sent (three days prior to the item's due date). The new due
date will be extended from the original due date.
Pleased note that an item will not be renewed if:
- There is a hold on the item
- The item is non-renewable, such as a museum pass
- The item is downloadable, such as an OverDrive or Hoopla e-book or e-audiobook
- The item has reached its maximum allowable renewals (currently four)
- The item is checked out through Prospector or Interlibrary loan
- The patron account charges have exceeded $10
- There is a block on the patron's account
Whether or not an item has been renewed will be reflected in your
three-day courtesy notice email. Items that have been automatically
renewed will display a new due date. Therefore, it is important to
carefully review your due dates to avoid any overdue fees.
An item may not renew because:
- The item is on hold for another borrower.
- The item is an ILL item.
- The item has already been renewed the maximum number of times.
- The item is long overdue.
- There is a block on the patron’s account
Please contact your local library if you have any questions.
All overdue notices will be send via email. If we don’t already have an
email from you in your account, please provide one at any Aurora
Public Library branch or online at My Account.
If you don’t have an email address on file with us, you may not receive
your holds and overdue notices. Without an email, you will need to visit
your online library account to see the status of your holds as well as
the current due dates for any checked out items.
First printed overdue notices are mailed 14 days after item is due.
A bill for the non-returned item is 14 days after the 1st overdue notice
(28 days overdue). This bill will include notification that if the
account is not cleared within seven days, it may be assigned to a
collection agency.
Any account 60 days overdue with a balance over $25 that involves a lost
book or other item will be sent to a collection agency. A $10
collection agency fee and per item processing fee is assessed in
addition to fines and the value of lost items.
Special items and items loaned through the Interlibrary Loan
(ILL) program may have special loan period and renewal periods often
driven by the loaning library system. To request an item, please fill
out the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Request form.
