The Emergency Response Team (ERT) is made up of 120 officers/agents, 12 sergeants, 4 lieutenants, and 1 captain who all take on extra
responsibilities in addition to their normal duties.
ERT members are specially trained in a variety of skills
to handle events that exceed the normal capacity of the Department, such as crowd control in riots or
large protests, weapons of mass destruction response, and searching for people or evidence in a large
crime scene.
The Emergency Response Team participated in operations for the Democratic National
Convention held in Denver in August of 2008.
ERT has helped with major crimes investigations by looking for weapons, shell casings and other
evidence. They have assisted in canvassing areas looking for lost children. They helped staff the
evacuation center in Aurora during the Hurricane Katrina rescue operations in August, 2006. They have
performed crowd control duties during large rallies in the city of Aurora and other locations in the state.
