Morning at the Museum 
Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m.
Ages 3-6
Drop in and spend the morning at the Aurora History Museum for educational stories, activities and more. New, free program every Wednesday. This program takes place inside or outside the museum depending on the weather. Please note, children must be supervised by an adult.

Documentary Screening and Community Workshop: “Evalo”

Saturday, Mar. 23, 5:00 – 7:15 p.m.
This event at AHM is the second in History Colorado’s Askkanwii: Diasporic Community of Colorado Series, which hopes to inspire community, curiosity and connection among the people of Colorado.“Evalo” explores a coming-of-age tradition from the country of Togo. Join us for a screening of the documentary film from Askkanwii Film Hub, followed by a community workshop facilitated by the producer.

Sage Blessing and Stories by Doug Good Feather

March 30, 10:30 a.m. – Noon
Doug Good Feather is from the Standing Rock Lakota Nation and a descendant of Grandpa Chief Sitting Bull. His work at the non-profits, Spirit Horse Nation and Lakota Way Healing Center is focused on community-based solutions to addiction, trauma and PTSD. Doug will join us to bless indigenous artifacts on loan to Aurora History Museum and tell traditional stories.

Great Outdoors of Aurora Closing Reception
Saturday, April 13, 4 – 7 p.m.
After almost a year, it’s time for our “Great Outdoors of Aurora” exhibit to close. We hope you will come see it one last time before it’s gone, and join us to thank everyone who made the exhibit possible. Light food and refreshments will be served.

April Homeschool Day: The Gold Rush
Thursday, April 18, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
“Pikes Peak or Bust!” Gold was one of the important factors that brought Americans across the Great Plains to Colorado. In 1859, thousands of people moved here in hopes of striking it rich. Learn about Colorado’s gold rush and how it shaped our region.

Celebrate Aurora’s Birthday!
Saturday, April 27 Noon – 3 p.m.
Happy Birthday Aurora! Join us to celebrate the city of Aurora’s 133rd birthday with snacks, cake, fun crafts and party games. Everyone is welcome to this free family friendly event to say Happy Birthday to the city of Aurora. 
No Registration necessary.

Aurora’s Story Presentation
Tuesday, April 30, 6:00 p.m.
Did you know that Aurora hasn’t always been called Aurora? When it was founded on April 30, 1891, the town straddling Colfax Avenue was named Fletcher. Learn what changed and why in this presentation about the founding and early years of our city to celebrate Aurora’s 133rd Birthday.

May History Hike: Digging into the Roots of Homesteading Architecture
Saturday, May 4, 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Join us at the Plains Conservation Center as we explore the prairie and unearth the remarkable history of sod homes. Tour the “soddies,” discover the ingenuity and tenacity that led settlers to build homes from the very earth beneath their feet and witness how these humble structures evolved into symbols of endurance and sustainability.

May Homeschool Day: Archaeology 
Monday, May 13, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
May is Archeology and Historic Preservation month. Learn about the science, techniques and ethics used by professional archaeologists with this fun, hands-on lesson about archeology in the city of Aurora.

June History Hike: The History of Fitzsimons and Anschutz Medical Campus
Saturday, June 1, 10 – 11 a.m.
This walk will explore Aurora’s military past as we tour the Anschutz Medical Campus, formerly Fitzsimons Army Hospital. Learn about why the hospital was located in Aurora, and understand the contributions that Fitzsimons made to the World Wars and the wars in Korea and Vietnam.

Opening Celebration for Mosaic of Cultures: Aurora’s Nepali Community
Saturday June 8, 4 – 7 p.m.
Celebrate the opening of our newest exhibit, “Mosaic of Cultures: Aurora’s Nepali Community.” Created with the input of Aurorans with roots in Nepal this exhibit will highlight the history, art, food, culture and contributions of Nepali people in Aurora. Enjoy Nepali food and entertainment and help us thank our community partners who made the exhibit possible.

Tour of DeLaney Farm Historic District
Thursday, June 13, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Join Aurora History Museum and the High Line Canal Conservancy on a morning walk around the DeLaney Historic District. This walk will focus on the history, wildlife and current uses of the DeLaney Farm property and the Canal that borders it. Be prepared for approximately 2 miles of walking on mixed surfaces.

Legendary Ladies of Colorado
Saturday June 22, 5 – 6 p.m.
The Legendary Ladies are back! The costumed researchers will return on June 22 to portray four women from Western history. Learn about Maude Nelson, inductee into the Women’s Baseball Hall of Fame, Juana Navarro Alsbury, survivor of the Battle of the Alamo, Jessie Benton Fremont, adventurer, author, and wife of John C. Fremont, and Josie Bassett, moonshiner, rustler, and homesteader. 
$5 per person

The Colorado Freedom Memorial
Wednesday June 26, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Did you know Colorado’s Freedom Memorial is right here in Aurora? Former radio personality Rick Crandall spearheaded the effort to create a place for family and friends to find peace in the memory of lost loved ones and educate all Americans on the loss we share in the name of freedom. Rick will join us to discuss the memorial in our exhibit, “80 Years Later: Aurora Remembers D-Day.”

DeLaney Historic District Cleanup and Open Day
Saturday June 29, 9:00 – 1:00
Make a change in your community and learn about it at the same time. Tour some of Aurora’s oldest buildings, the Gully house and the Round Barn and join us in cleaning up the historic site. Whether you want to improve your community, learn about local history or just take a walk, this is the event for you! Cleaning supplies and snacks provided by the High Line Canal Conservancy.
No Registration required. Delaney Historic District 170 S Chambers Road.

Fridays at Coal Creek Schoolhouse 
Every Friday June 7 through Aug. 9, 10:30 – 11:15 a.m.
Every Friday we will open the historic Coal Creek Schoolhouse for a family-friendly, all ages program with a different topic and presenter each week. Schedule coming soon. Free, no registration required.

When Was It? Every Wednesday we post #WhenWasItWednesday with an object or photograph from our collection to social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). You’ll need to guess the year based on what you see (car models, stores, fashion, hair styles and trends). Here's the catch: we don't have dates for every object or photograph in our collection; we are counting on you to help us narrow down the time frame! @AuroraHistoryCO on all platforms.

Geocaches

Find geocaches located at Aurora Landmarks No. 5, No. 9, No. 11 and No. 26 using Geocaching.com. After you find the cache, visit the Aurora History Museum during regular business hours and receive a limited edition coin for each geocache you find. We showcase a different historic landmark every year, so start your collection today!
Coins are limited and are available on a first come, first serve basis. You do not need to pick up the coin on the same day you find the cache.
