Water conservation tips

You can conserve water every day.
There are many ways you can conserve water, and every drop counts in Colorado’s arid environment.
Inside, household leaks can add up quickly – up to gallons of water lost every day. Outdoor residential water use accounts for 8 billion gallons of water use every day. The average house uses more water outside than in.
Here are some simple ways to save water.

A sink with three faucets running
  • Turn off the sink when you’re brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Shower more often than taking a bath and keep showers short
  • Dishwashers use less water than washing dishes
  • If you don’t have a dishwasher, use a washbasin or plug your sink to wash dishes by hand
  • Compost food waste instead of using a garbage disposal
  • Keep a pitcher of water in your fridge to have cold water available rather than letting your sink run until its cold
  • Use cold water while washing your clothes in the washer
  • Only run your washer or dishwasher when they are full
Sprinkler running in the rain
  • Avoid overwatering your yard by setting your irrigation timer according to our recommended watering times.

  • Convert your yard from thirsty turf to a water-wise landscape.
  • Rather than washing your car with your hose, go to a car wash that recycles water.
  • If you have a pool, cover it when it's not in use. This will reduce evaporation.
  • Consider collecting rainwater to use to water your plants/yard. Colorado state law allows for each household to store two barrels with a combined capacity of 110 gallons of water.
