Starting the week of Jan. 30 (weather permitting), the city of Aurora in collaboration with American Civil Constructors will start work on the High Line Canal Trail project between East Colfax Avenue and just north of I-70 along Tower Road. Crews will work on the project Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. Work will continue through its anticipated completion in Spring 2024.

Nearly two miles of the new multi-use trail will boast a continuous 8-foot-wide concrete trail, two  pedestrian bridges (one to cross over the canal just south of Smith Road and one over I-70 just east of the Tower Road interchange), an upgraded railroad crossing to promote pedestrian and cyclist safety, and access to the 71-mile High Line Canal Regional Trail within the metro area. Designed with community input, the new trail will provide close-to-home, accessible recreation opportunities within the community and serve a diverse population that may otherwise have limited opportunities to access natural areas.

American Civil Constructors plans to begin work on the project’s south end and between East Colfax and East 19th avenues on the east side of Tower Road and along the canal. Vehicular and pedestrian travelers can expect intermittent delays in these areas for the first two months; alternate routes are recommended when possible. The contractor also plans to start working on the bridge abutment just south of I-70 when the project kicks off.  Traffic impacts will be posted as needed at AuroraGov.org/HLCT as the project progresses.

The city has been granted federal funds through the Denver Regional Council of Governments to help pay for the $8.5 million trail construction project, with local match amounts through the city’s Capital Projects Fund and Park Development Fund. Additional funding partners consist of the Conservation Trust Fund, Adams County Open Space Grant, and the Adams County Open Space Tax Shareback. Visit AuroraGov.org/HLCT for up-to-date information about the project.
