The Great Outdoors of Aurora” Exhibit Opening

Swing, Ride, Cast, Swim and Play: Aurora History Museum Celebrates “The Great Outdoors of Aurora” Exhibit Opening
Posted on 05/02/2023

The Aurora History Museum and Historic Sites opens the new exhibit “The Great Outdoors of Aurora” Tuesday, May 2. The new display celebrates Aurora’s vibrant outdoor opportunities and dives deep into the history behind the activities we love. Discover the stories behind our reservoirs, city parks, nature centers, the High Line Canal, swimming pools, golf courses and more, all within the city of Aurora.

“Coloradans are some of the most active people in the country, and Aurora offers some great opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy our city,” said T. Scott Williams, museum director. “Whether it’s our trail system, the High Line Canal or nearby Cherry Creek State Park, there is a history behind these places, and we look forward to sharing that with our visitors; our hope is to encourage our guests to get outside and enjoy what our city has to offer.”

Alongside the history of Aurora’s outdoor spaces, the exhibit will profile local businesses and organizations supporting recreation. From golf shops, bait and tackle, bike shops and outfitters – many local entrepreneurs cater to the outdoor community. The services they provide support Aurorans wanting to explore their city, and the history of these businesses is part of the history of Aurora.

“The Great Outdoors of Aurora” will be on display until April 21, 2024. The exhibit will feature historic recreational equipment, hands-on activities, archival photography, oral histories and immersive elements that will engage and excite visitors of all ages. If you enjoy spending time outdoors and exploring nature, you won't want to miss it.

The Aurora History Museum will also celebrate its newest exhibit with a fun outdoor “Field Day” event for the whole family from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at the Great Lawn of the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway and inside the museum. Join the museum for organized outdoor events, crafts, activities, old-fashioned games and a chance to view the exhibit. Please register at AuroraMuseum.org.
