Used Cooking Oil

CENTRAL FACILITIES RECYCLING CENTER CLOSED AUGUST 31, 2020

DUE TO ONGOING ISSUES WITH COVID-19, THE POST-THANKSGIVING COOKING OIL COLLECTION EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED.

If your favorite cooking method for turkey is deep frying it, you'll have a lot of leftover cooking oil. Do not pour it down your drain as it will cause a backup. These can be expensive to clear out, and are unpleasant to deal with. Flushing it down the toilet will create the same issue.

There are also environmental factors to consider. Oil can spread very thinly across water over a large area changing the chemistry and health of our ecosystem; so it's especially important not to dispose of any oil near lakes, streams or watersheds. Even placing the oil in the trash as a liquid could mean that it could leach out of the landfill and into the ground and surrounding area.

To ensure the oil doesn't get into the environment, add kitty litter, sand or sawdust to help solidify the fryer oil. Make sure the hardened oil is disposed of in a leak-proof container. The oil mixture can then safely be placed in the trash.

Always try to use less oil whenever possible. Some oils can even be used several times, which will save you money in the long run.
