Impound Lot

The Aurora Police Department Vehicle Impound Detail is responsible for storing all vehicles seized by Aurora Police Officers. Vehicles may be impounded for a variety of reasons to include abandoned vehicles, vehicles that contain or are evidence, and impounding for statutory reasons such as a non-drivable car after an accident, illegal license plates or the arrest of the driver.

Vehicles in Aurora can only be impounded by Aurora police officers and Parking Control Officers. If you think your car may have been impounded, call 303.326.8680. Be sure to have the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) available.

If you received a yellow postcard or a certified letter from the Impound Detail and you are no longer the owner of the vehicle, you can disregard the notice.

To have a vehicle released:

  • A driver with a valid driver’s license is required
  • The vehicle must be property registered and have valid insurance
  • Vehicles without insurance or registration can be released on a tow away basis only
  • The vehicle and property in the vehicle can only be released to the registered owner, the owner’s agent, or lien holder
  • To give someone else permission to pick up property, a notarized letter from the registered owner specifying who has permission must be submitted to the Impound Detail
  • This letter can be faxed to 303.326.8603 or emailed to [email protected]
  • A government issued picture identification card is required for all transactions
  • Proof of ownership must be presented. Proof consists of the registration, temporary registration documents, or title with the owner’s name on the front of the title

The Impound Detail accepts cash, major credit cards, or a corporate check. You can call 303.341.2047 to get accurate charges.

The Aurora Police Department Vehicle Impound Detail and storage lot is located at 19900 E. Colfax Ave, about one mile east of North Tower Road on East Colfax Avenue at the M&M Towing yard.

Impound Hours: Monday - Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. - closed Sundays and city observed holidays.

City of Aurora Motor Vehicle Theft Recovery Victim Voucher Program:

Beginning January 1, 2023, if a motor vehicle theft is recovered by the Aurora Police Department, the owner, owner’s agent or lien holder of such vehicle will have 72 hours from time of impoundment to retrieve their vehicle from the APD Impound Lot at no cost. If a Sunday or city observed holiday falls within the first 72 hours of impoundment those hours will also be covered. If vehicle is retrieved after the first 72 hours, a voucher will still be issued for those costs associated with those first 72 hours; however, any storage fees accrued after those 72 hours will be the responsibility of the owner, owner’s agent or lien holder of such vehicle.

The impounded vehicle must have been reported stolen to a police department and have a corresponding report validating such claim. Only stolen vehicles recovered by the Aurora Police Department and towed to the APD Impound Lot are eligible for this voucher program.

Aurora Impound technicians will issue the voucher to an authorized person when that vehicle is released from impound. The voucher is only valid at the M&M Tow yard and is not redeemable for cash. The voucher amount is issued on the day of release (regardless whether the owner removes vehicle from M&M tow yard on such date) and fees covered only through that APD release date. The issued voucher is redeemable for 60 days before it becomes void.

Vehicles not claimed after certain time periods specified by law will be auctioned. For auction information, see Roller Auction or call them at 303.289.1600.
