(November 11) A 12-year-old boy has died and a 14-year-old remains in serious condition after a shooting on Zion Street. One person of interest has been detained.

On November 11, 2022, about 2:58 p.m., Aurora Police Officers responded to a shooting in the 900 block of North Zion Street. Officers found two young boys, a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old, both of whom are related to each other, suffering from gunshot wounds. They were both immediately transported to the hospital. This person, a young adult, will not be identified unless they are officially charged.

(November 4) An Aurora man has been arrested in connection with Thursday’s road rage incident involving a uniformed Aurora police officer.

Jaquey Talone Wyrick, 26, was arrested on suspicion of one count of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer.

Wyrick was the driver of a red Toyota Yaris who twice cut off an off-duty officer near a fast-food parking lot near the intersection of Mississippi Avenue and Chambers Road in Aurora. Wyrick then chased the officer to Interstate 225 where a 16-year-old male passenger fired multiple shots at the officer’s personal vehicle while driving south between Mississippi and Iliff.

The 16-year-old male later died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after barricading himself in a third-story apartment in the 1000 block of South Elkhart Way. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office after positive identification and notification of next of kin.

Aurora Police Department detectives are still investigating the incident and are interested in speaking with anyone who might have witnessed the shooting, which took place between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m. on I-225 between Mississippi and Iliff. Investigators also want to speak with anyone who’s vehicle might have been damaged by gunfire during the incident.

Information previously released.

(November 3) A teenager died Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound hours after shooting at a uniformed Aurora police officer during a road rage incident.

The incident began shortly after 8 a.m. in a fast-food parking lot near the intersection of Mississippi Avenue and Chambers Road in Aurora. An off-duty Aurora police officer was driving in her personal car in the parking lot after her shift when a red Toyota sedan exiting a drive-thru cut off the officer. The officer honked at the driver of the sedan.

The officer exited the parking lot, driving southbound on Chambers toward Mississippi. The driver of the red sedan drove across opposing lanes of traffic to again cut off the officer. The officer then drove westbound on Mississippi toward Interstate 225 with the red sedan chasing.

The officer pulled onto southbound I-225. While driving south between Mississippi and Iliff, the red sedan pulled up next to the officer’s driver’s side window. A front seat passenger rolled down the window, leaned halfway outside of the car and fired multiple rounds at the officer.

The officer was not injured during the shooting.

The officer noted the plate of the red sedan and called 911. Patrol officers responded to the registered address of the vehicle owner, which was located in the 1000 block of South Elkhart Way, near Mississippi Avenue and Sable Boulevard.

Patrol officers were able to positively identify the driver, a 26-year-old man, and took him into custody. The suspected shooter barricaded himself in a third-story apartment.

Patrol officers attempted to establish contact with the suspected shooter to negotiate his surrender, but those efforts were unsuccessful. At 10:24 a.m., in an effort to elicit a response and establish contact, officers fired a 40mm foam projectile against the siding of the apartment building. Shortly thereafter, a sound consistent with a gunshot was heard from inside the apartment.

The Aurora Police Department SWAT and Crisis Negotiations teams responded to the scene and for several hours made additional attempts to establish contact with the suspect. At 2:20 p.m., SWAT entered the apartment and discovered the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Early information indicates the suspect is a 16-year-old male.

The identity of the deceased will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office after positive identification and notification of next of kin. The identity of the driver is not being released today due to the ongoing investigation.

From 3:30 to 4:15 p.m., southbound I-225 between Mississippi and Iliff was closed to search for ballistic evidence. Officers recovered several shell casings consistent with the weapon recovered from the apartment.
